Perhaps the quintessential California neo-noir, The Long Goodbye sees Robert Altman update Raymond Chandler’s novel to the shaggy dog world of 1970s Los Angeles. Elliott Gould delivers one of his most iconic performances as Phillip Marlowe, a dishevelled private eye more concerned with feeding his cat than cracking cases. With a cigarette forever dangling out of his mouth, he gets drawn deeper and deeper into a web of intrigue involving his old friend Terry Lennox, a beautiful rich woman who’s lost her alcoholic writer of a husband, a vicious gangster and a suitcase of drug money.
A huge influence on films like Inherent Vice and The Big Lebowski (also screening in this series!), The Long Goodbye is essential viewing for all noir-heads, cat lovers and L.A. tragics alike. While receiving mixed reviews on its initial release, the film has since become a cult classic, and is considered among Altman’s very best films.
