Toni (Royalty Highwater) trains as a boxer with her brother at a community center in Cincinnati’s West End, but becomes fascinated by the dance team that also practices there. Enamored by their strength and confidence, Toni eventually joins the group, eagerly absorbing routines, mastering drills, and doing her best to fit in. As she grapples with her individual identity amongst this new world, strange things start to happen… One by one, the girls are felled by episodes of fainting, swooning, moaning, and shaking in a seemingly uncontrollable catharsis. Will Toni also experience ‘the fits’?

This independently made film by first time feature director Anna Rose Holmer gives us hope for the world outside of Hollywood, and we are thrilled to screen The Fits exclusively in Sydney! Having premiered at the 2015 Venice Film Festival, Holmer’s film has gone on to great critical acclaim, being picked up at all the best arthouse cinemas here and America (if you’re in Melbourne, catch it at ACMI). The Fits isn’t just a rite-of-passage, it’s a captivating, mesmerising journey into adolescence and independence.
