Ok, are you ready for this? Because things are going to get a little hazy. In a drug-fueled, paranoid 1970s Los Angeles, Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), a fuzzy-haired, mutton-chopped private eye gets asked by his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston) to help protect her new lover, a wealthy real estate developer, from being abducted and committed to an insane asylum by his wife. At the same time, Doc is working on finding a member of the Aryan brotherhood who owes a debt to a black power prison gang. And then he’s also been hired by a saxophonist’s widow who believes her dead husband is sill alive somewhere. Confused yet? Don’t worry, you’re meant to be.
This is the first Thomas Pynchon novel adapted into a film, which isn’t surprising given that the American writer’s works are notoriously dense and complex. Praise is due to Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood), who apparently wrote the film concurrently with The Master. Inherent Vice is a crazy, wild, colourful trip of a film with an all-star cast including Phoenix, Waterston, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Benicio del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short and Joanna Newsom, with a score written by regular P.T. Anderson collaborator, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.
